XXI Annual Meeting
of the European Society of Surgery

& 2nd European Meeting of Residents & PhD in Surgery

Kraków (Poland), September 27-30, 2017

2nd European Meeting of Residents and PhD in Surgery

The success of the first European Meeting of Residents and PhD students in Surgery in 2016 in Naples, Italy as a part of the Annual Meeting of the European Society of Surgery encouraged us to organize the next Resident’s Meeting in Krakow on the  27th – 30th September 2017, jointly with the 21st Annual Meeting of the European Society of Surgery  and  the 68th Congress of the Polish Association of Surgeons.

The languages of the conference are Polish and English, but all parts dedicated to young surgeons will be in English.  A variety of activities are planned for young surgeons:

  • pre-congress workshops in laparoscopic surgery, open surgery and team-work
  • possibility of presentation of their scientific achievements during scientific sessions of the congress
  • educational and “How I do it” sessions
  • a quiz game for teams of residents from different centres.

A special lowered congress fee is available for residents and PhD students to enable them participation in the Conference.

All educational activities will be awarded with certificates and one young surgeon will receive a special award for the best scientific presentation.  We would like to encourage teams of residents to take part in the quiz game.  Teams of three residents will answer questions from general surgery, anatomy, pathophysiology, perioperative care and diagnostic imaging.  The winners will be invited to the next ESS meeting which will be held in Yerevan, Armenia in 2018.

Who can participate?

All surgeons in training who are under 35 years old, regardless of their specialty, can participate. If you are a resident in general surgery, visceral surgery, thoracic surgery, trauma surgery etc. – This meeting is for you. PhD students under 35 years old are also welcome.  The surgical quiz game is for participants who have not yet passed their specialization exam.

Why participate?

Since young researchers are preferred in our program, you will have the opportunity to present your research during the big surgical meeting. Of course, usually, there is more than one author of a presentation, however, the presenting author should be a young surgeon.

You can attend one of the pre-congress workshops to learn new skills, and there will be an educational session where you can learn directly from experts. Last, but not least, you will have the chance to meet new colleagues and make connections for your future personally, not virtually.

What will I formally receive?

This depends on your activity during the conference. All participants will obtain a certificate of attendance. Presenters will be granted with a certificate of active scientific participation, and the best presentation will be awarded.  For those who will take part in a workshop, a separate certificate will be given.

The quiz game – what is this?

Teams of 3 residents can apply. There will be an elimination round to select the 10 best teams. At a special session during the conference, the best teams will be asked questions. The winners will be awarded with invitations to the next ESS Meeting in Yerevan, Armenia in 2018.

How to register?

Just register to the congress online. In the registration form, mark that you are a young surgeon. Along with the registration, send a separate letter to the ESS office with the confirmation of being a resident in a surgical specialty or a PhD student from the hospital or department. This letter should contain the date of birth of the participant. Send it to info@essurg.org no later than on the day of registration.

How to create a team for the quiz game?

Ask your friends to do it with you. All team members should register to the congress.  Send an e-mail to info@essurg.org with the names of team members and the name of the centre, city, or country you are from. You will be contacted by the co-ordinator. If you are interested in the quiz game, but cannot complete a team, please contact us. We will help you in completing a team.

Can everyone participate in workshops?

The number of participants is limited because of the resources needed.  Workshops are additionally paid; it is not included in your congress fee.  Please refer to the workshops section.

Is that all?

Almost. The European Society of Surgery takes care of young surgeons. Your attendance and all activity within our society will be recorded. All those who attend the Residents Meeting twice, have been awarded, or who were involved in the organization of our meetings, can apply for a letter of recommendation, or a letter of support. This may be important for applications for professional positions. Please do not hesitate to apply.
